The Second Death and The First Resurrection

Just taking a brief look at the second death in relation to the first resurrection.

Forgive the colors, they sometimes help me to better see and point out the connections.

First, let’s look at the scriptures which reference “the second death”, specifically:

Rev 2:11   He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Rev 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Rev 20:14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 21:8  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

So we know that “the second death” has to do with being “cast into the lake of fire”. I think it is important to note this, as many seem to believe that “the second death” is just another name for “the lake of fire”. But the passage says that it is being “cast into the lake of fire” that is “the second death”.  I think this is an important distinction that needs to be pointed out, especially since “our God is a consuming fire” and we are “baptized with the Holy Spirit and with fire”, even baptized into Jesus Christ, the Last Adam (there being only two, the first and the last; first the natural, then the spiritual).

So here we have it. According to Paul, we have been baptized into the death of Jesus Christ:

Rom 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

He also goes on to say that it is because we were “buried with him by baptism into death” that we should also “walk in the newness of life” because it is by being “planted together in the likeness of His death” that we shall also know “the likeness of His resurrection”, knowing that “our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”

So then, it is by being BURIED WITH HIM IN DEATH we can also know THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION (= THE FIRST).  And…

Rev 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

And is this not what Paul strived to know? The power of His resurrection?

Php 3:8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Php 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Php 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Php 3:11  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

So, then, it’s all about attaining unto “the resurrection of the dead” and is not Jesus Christ “the resurrection and the life”?

Joh 11:23  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Joh 11:24  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Joh 11:25  Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth IN ME, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Joh 11:26  And whosoever liveth and believeth IN ME shall never die. Believest thou this?

Not many seem to believe that Jesus Christ IS the resurrection and that it is all about being found IN HIM (and HE IN US), as it is not until HE ((who is our life)) APPEARS that ((we shall appear)) WITH HIM IN GLORY:

Col 3:1  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Col 3:2  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Col 3:3  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Col 3:4  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

As CHRIST IN YOU ~is~ THE HOPE OF GLORY!!

Col 1:26  Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

Col 1:27  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

This is what Paul waited for, for Christ to be formed in them:

Gal 4:19  My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

This is how we are “delivered of the child” (still in bondage and no different from a servant, though he be lord of all) and receive “the adoption of sons” (by having received the spirit of His Son, by which we cry ABBA, FATHER!!).

So then what does THE FIRST RESURRECTION have to do with THE SECOND DEATH?

Well, it is only by being found IN CHRIST that one can know the power of HIS RESURRECTION. That means that we must be “buried” WITH HIM (in death) in order to be “risen” WITH HIM (to life).

We know that those who overcome are not hurt by the second death for the second death has no power over those who have part in the first resurrection. But does that mean that those who have part in the first resurrection are not cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death?

Let’s take a look at what happened to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Dan 3:20  And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

Dan 3:21  Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

Dan 3:22  Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Dan 3:23  And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

Dan 3:24  Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.

Dan 3:25  He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

Dan 3:26  Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.

Dan 3:27  And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.

Which takes us right back to:

Rev 2:11   He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Rev 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

We have to remember that the way of LIFE IS ABOVE to the wise that he may depart from HELL BENEATH!

All Blessings in Christ!!

About Christine

My name is Christine and since my favorite past-time, the one that I find the most fulfilling, is studying the scriptures and seeking to know and understand "the deep things of God", I have created this blog as a place to not only post my own bible studies but as a way to connect with others who are are also seeking the Lord and the Truth. I've posted some of my studies on other websites and haven't yet decided if I will post them here, as well, or if I will just post future blogs/studies here. We'll see. Thanks for stopping by and please do so again... maybe after I get something posted. :) ALL BLESSINGS IN CHRIST!!
