Now are we the sons of God and it doth not yet appear what we shall be?

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  ~ 1Jn 3:2

I’ve been thinking on this verse in 1 John a lot lately because I hear and read so many quoting it, claiming that even though we “are” sons it does not yet appear what we “shall be”. They teach only “the earnest of the spirit” and see “the first resurrection” as a future event, reserved only for a few believers.

This became a point of contention for me in a group I was fellowshipping with several years ago, And though, at the time, I has only known the Lord for about a year my understanding of these things has not changed during the almost 5 years of study that has followed my being disfellowship from that group. In fact, my understanding seems to have been confirmed over and over again.

I am going to write more on this and post it later, but John is not talking about “sons” (uiōn) in this verse. He is talking about “children” (tekna).

What we “are” is CHILDREN. What we “shall be” is SONS!

We are “saved in childbearing”, in being “delivered of the child” by receiving THE SPIRIT OF HIS SON and receiving THE ADOPTION OF SONS! Which IS “the redemption of our body”… “the redemption of the purchased possession”.

Let us not think that this is some postmortem event or a resurrection yet to take place. For THE RESURRECTION that we are striving to know is HIS RESURRECTION, THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST, THE FIRST RESURRECTION!

Let us also understand that the only WAY to THE FIRST RESURRECTION is through THE SECOND DEATH! And they are BOTH found IN CHRIST!

By our baptism into HIS DEATH and by having part in HIS RESURRECTION!

So let us not ‘skip over’ HIS RESURRECTION and “count it not” just because Paul said he “counted not” HIMSELF to have attained unto THE RESURRECTION of the dead. He counted not HIMSELF because if we bear witness of ourselves our witness is not true! Not even Jesus bore witness of Himself. The Father bore witness of Him. Not only in His “works” but by THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS, in a the volume of A BOOK, that was WRITTEN OF HIM!

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, LET US GO ON UNTO PERFECTION; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And THIS WILL WE DO, IF GOD PERMIT.  ~ Heb 6:1-3

Let us GO ON UNTO PERFECTION!

All Blessings in Christ!

About Christine

My name is Christine and since my favorite past-time, the one that I find the most fulfilling, is studying the scriptures and seeking to know and understand "the deep things of God", I have created this blog as a place to not only post my own bible studies but as a way to connect with others who are are also seeking the Lord and the Truth. I've posted some of my studies on other websites and haven't yet decided if I will post them here, as well, or if I will just post future blogs/studies here. We'll see. Thanks for stopping by and please do so again... maybe after I get something posted. :) ALL BLESSINGS IN CHRIST!!
