Looking, again, at the relationship between A CHILD and A SON in scripture, particularly in relation to being BORN AGAIN.
In Isaiah the Lord speaks of taking away from Jerusalem “the stay and the staff” along with the prophet, the prudent, the ancient, etc (which all speak to the spiritually mature) and giving to them, instead, CHILDREN to be their princes and BABES to rule over them. This, He says, is the ruin and fall of Jerusalem and Judah, for CHILDREN are their oppressors and WOMEN rule over them. They (these babes/children/women) leading them are causing them to err and are destroying the way of their paths. These must therefore refer to those who are not spiritually mature.
Isa 3:1-15 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand: In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people. For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
If we look at Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Israel and Judah when the Lord “shall cause them to return to the land He gave their fathers”, he speaks of “a man travailing with child as a woman in travail”. He even speaks of “every man with his hands in his loins”.
Jer 30:1-9 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book. For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it. And these are the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.
This day shall be like no other. For with this travail comes salvation!! Which must be what Paul was referring to when he spoke of the coming forth of the Son of God, which would redeem them that were under the law – who he refers to as CHILDREN – and says that it is for the receiving of THE ADOPTION OF SONS. For “the heir, as long as he is A CHILD, differs nothing from A SERVANT, thou he be lord of all”.
Gal 4:1-7 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Now we also know that Abram, who had not yet been “given” the “seed” promised to him by the Lord, said that “one BORN in his house” (as A SERVANT) would be his heir. Yet, the Lord said THIS “shall not be” THINE HEIR, but “HE” that shall come forth “out of” THINE OWN BOWELS “shall be” THINE HEIR.
Gen 15:3-4 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
Now we know that Abraham has TWO SONS. The first born being Ishmael who was conceived by “the bond woman”, the second being Isaac who was conceived in Sarah’s womb, even in her old age, as the fulfillment of the promise of the Lord. The first was born “of the flesh”, the second was born “of the promise”. This “second child” was “given” to Abraham from the Lord and it would be through “this seed” that the promised “Seed” of Christ would come, Him through whom ALL NATIONS would be blessed.
These “two seeds” speak to the difference between the natural and the spiritual, the first born and the second born, that which is born of the flesh (man’s effort and doing) and that which is born of the promise (God’s effort and doing). It is a demonstration of “first the natural, then the spiritual” (just as Cain and Abel and so many other ‘types’ in scripture demonstrate).
This is a picture of our need to be “born again” in order to inherit “the kingdom of God”. For that which is born OF THE FLESH “is” FLESH and that which is born OF THE SPIRIT “is” SPIRIT.
Joh 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
We have to be “born” OF THE SPIRIT to be “the sons” OF GOD. The “heir” OF GOD (CHRIST) “comes forth from” HIS OWN BOWELS!
And this distinction between that which is born of the flesh and that which is born of the spirit is the difference between A CHILD and A SON! A CHILD “is born” but A SON “is given”.
Isa 9:6 For unto us A CHILD IS BORN, unto us A SON IS GIVEN: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Again, Paul tells us that the heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant, that the child is under tutors and governors (the law) UNTIL the time appointed by the Father, when He shall SEND FORTH (give) HIS SON that “we” might receive THE ADOPTION (placement) OF SONS.
This is what it means to be “born again”, to be “begotten from above”, and to be “resurrected from the dead”. For not even Jesus was declared to be “the Son of God” but by “the resurrection of the dead”
Rom 1:1-4 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
He was “made of the seed of David” according to the flesh, but declared to be “the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead”! Recall that it was when Jesus came up out of the waters at the river Jordan (a figure of his death and resurrection) that the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and God said: THIS IS MY SON
Mat 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And “this” is how we are declared to be “the sons of God” as well! We must be “begotten from above”, we must be “born again” by being “resurrected from the dead”. Not resurrected after a carnal truth for that which is born of the flesh IS FLESH and that which is born of the spirit IS SPIRIT. It is THE SPIRIT that quickens, the flesh profits nothing. There is a natural body (fathered by our natural, earthly, father, born of corruptible seed) and there is a spiritual body (Fathered by our heavenly Father, born of Incorruptible Seed).
According to Isaiah, it is THE SERVANT of the Lord who is BLIND!
Isaiah 42:19 Who is BLIND, but my SERVANT? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is BLIND as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’S SERVANT?
Are we seeing the connections here? Why Paul said that “the heir, as long as he is a child differs nothing from a servant”?
Jesus speaks to this, also, when His disciples ask Him about a man who was “blind from his birth”. His disciples wanted to know if he was BORN BLIND “because of” HIS OWN SIN or “the sin of” HIS PARENTS. Jesus said: “Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that THE WORKS OF GOD should be MADE MANIFEST IN HIM”.
John 9:1-5 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
HE is THE LIGHT of the world! When THE NIGHT comes (that Light is put out) no man can work because those who walk “in the night” stumble in the dark, they cannot see (they are BLIND), they “sleep” (they are DEAD).
In Mat 23, Jesus calls the Scribes and Pharisees, who “sit in Moses seat”, BLIND GUIDES! These are THE SERVANTS of the Lord! They are the “babes”, the “children”, the “women” spoken of by Isaiah, who were set to “rule over” the Lord’s people.
But God had “appointed a time” when He should “deliver them” and they should be “no more children” but SONS. Then are they “of age”, ABLE TO SEE and SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, as shown (again) with the man who was BORN BLIND that “the works of God” should be made manifest “in him”.
Joh 9:19-21 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
Israel’s deliverance “out of Egypt” was given to us “as an example” of this. Moses was sent to tell Pharaoh to: LET MY SON GO, THAT HE MAY SERVE ME!
Exo 4:22-23 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.
It was not A SON who was “in bondage” (IN EGYPT) but A SON who was being CALLED OUT OF EGYPT:
Hos 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Jesus said that He has come into the world that they WHICH SEE NOT “might see” and that they WHICH SEE “might be made blind”.
Joh 9:29-33 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
Only God and those born of God can open the eyes of those BORN BLIND!
When the Pharisees asked Jesus: “Are we blind also?” Jesus said; “If ye WERE BLIND, ye should have NO SIN: but NOW ye SAY, WE SEE; therefore YOUR SIN REMAINETH”!
Joh 9:39-41 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
Because they are walking IN THE FLESH and “seeing” only that which the carnal man can see, which are only THE THINGS OF MAN, not the things of God, they were teaching for doctrine THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN. These who were “saying” WE SEE were BLIND GUIDES, sitting in Moses seat, ruling over God’s people. Jesus said I am come that THEY “which” SEE NOT “might” SEE”… but because THEY “say” WE SEE their sins remains.
Jesus (the Word of God) came (comes) TO GIVE SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO HEAL THE SICK, TO RAISE THE DEAD! To deliver THE CHILD from BONDAGE! To call God’s SON out of EGYPT!
Mat 11:4-6 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Paul said that he was given FOR A PATTERN!
1Ti 1:15-17 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
And we can certainly see how Paul fulfilled that pattern… of being “born blind” (after a spiritual truth) and “receiving sight” – after which he “arose” and was “baptized”. And when he had “received meat” he was strengthened.
Act 9:17-20 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
And of being “delivered of the child” by being “redeemed from under the law”:
1Co 13:9-13 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
He even “travailed in birth” AGAIN as he waited for Christ (THE SON/IMAGE OF GOD) “to be formed” IN those whom he called “my little children”.
Gal 4:19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
Paul said that it was by the grace of God that he was “separated” from his mother’s womb (his carnal mind, the pride represented in those “scales” which fell from his eyes, keeping him “blind” to the Truth) so that THE SON could be ‘revealed” IN HIM, that he might PREACH “HIM” among the heathens.
Gal 1:15-19 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother.
For this he did not confer with “flesh and blood”, but received it BY REVELATION – just as was shown in Peter when Jesus asked him: “Whom say ye that I am?” To which Peter replied: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Marvel not that we “must be” BORN AGAIN!
Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Then we become “the second child” that shall “stand up” IN HIS STEAD
Ecc 4:15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
We see this even in Genesis with Abel and Seth, of whom Eve said: “God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew”.
Gen 4:25-26 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
THEN BEGAN MEN TO CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD!
Paul said: “We are ambassadors FOR CHRIST… and pray you IN CHRIST’S STEAD, be ye reconciled to God”.
2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
Revelation speaks of A WOMAN who brings forth A MAN CHILD… and HER CHILD was CAUGHT UP unto God and to His throne.
Rev 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
Paul also speaks of being “caught up” to THE THIRD HEAVEN, to PARADISE in relation to “visions and revelations of the Lord”.
2Co 12:1-4 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth); such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth); How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
In Hebrew we read that we enter into God’s rest (the true Sabbath, of which the seventh day Sabbath, given to the Jews, did bear witness to) on “a certain day”, a day that is “called” TODAY, a “day” that can only be entered into if we will “hear His voice” and “harden not” our hearts!
Heb 4:1-11 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, Today, after so long a time; as it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Jesus spoke of “this day” when He said, to the thief on the cross being crucified with him: “TODAY shalt thou be WITH ME in PARADISE”.
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Let us, then, obey the truth, through the spirit, “being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever”
1Pe 1:18-25 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
Behold the promises of God. For “as many as receive Him, to them gave he power to become THE SONS OF GOD, even TO THEM THAT BELIEVE ON HIS NAME; which were born NOT of blood, NOR the will of the flesh, NOR the will of man, but OF GOD”
Joh 1:11-13 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
MARVEL NOT that YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN!
