Mary as a figure of the Church

I got a little sidetracked when I was looking at John and the locust, so I decided to break that study off into this one on Mary….

woman behold thy son

Luke 1:35  And the angel answered and said unto her, THE HOLY SPIRIT SHALL COME UPON THEE, AND THE POWER OF THE HIGHEST SHALL OVERSHADOW THEE: THEREFORE ALSO THAT HOLY THING WHICH SHALL BE BORN OF THEE SHALL BE CALLED THE SON OF GOD.

Now many there are today who give special honor to Mary, as the mother of Jesus, according to the flesh. But have you ever noticed that Paul, other than greeting her is some of his letters (along with others), doesn’t speak of her except as she (in a figure) represents the plan of salvation/redemption?

Gal 4:4-5 But when the fulness of the time was come, God SENT FORTH HIS SON, MADE OF A WOMAN, made UNDER THE LAW, to REDEEM them that were under the law, THAT WE MIGHT RECEIVE THE ADOPTION OF SONS.

Paul wrote of espousing/presenting “believers” to Christ “as a chaste virgin”.

2Co 11:2  For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you AS A CHASTE VIRGIN to Christ.

Even Jesus tells his disciples that they would be AS A WOMAN “whose hour is come” TO BE DELIVERED OF THE CHILD!

John 16:20-21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That YE SHALL WEEP AND LAMENT, but the world shall rejoice: and YE SHALL BE SORROWFUL, but YOUR SORROW SHALL BE TURNED INTO JOY. A WOMAN WHEN SHE IS IN TRAVAIL HATH SORROW, because HER HOUR IS COME: but as soon as she is DELIVERED OF THE CHILD, she REMEMBERETH NO MORE the anguish, FOR JOY that A MAN IS BORN into the world.

In this we can see how “the one” (WOMAN) represents “the many” (CHURCH)

The WOMAN who is “the mother” who “gives birth” to THE SON OF GOD! THE MAN JESUS CHRIST

And the WOMAN who is “the mother of us all”… the New Jerusalem, the Holy CITY, who is THE BRIDE OF CHRIST! Who also “births” A MAN INTO THE WORLD!

Another example would be when Jesus was talking to the people and his mother and brothers “stood without desiring to speak with him”. When someone told him this, he did not tell them to “let them in” but stretches forth his hands “toward his disciples” and says “Behold my mother and my brethren! For whoever shall do the will of my father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother”. (Mat 12-48-50)

Paul said we are to KNOW NO MAN after the flesh, not even Christ!

2Co 5:16  Wherefore HENCEFORTH KNOW WE NO MAN AFTER THE FLESH: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

Paul got it!!

You don’t see Paul going around defending a natural/earthly/fleshly understanding of the scriptures, as you see so many preachers today. He is always drawing us to a “higher” understanding, a “spiritual” understanding…. I guess you could even say a “deeper” understanding.

That’s one of the reasons that we should be very careful about how we read and understand Paul’s words…. especially as they relate to “women”.

1Co 2:9-11  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us BY HIS SPIRIT: for THE SPIRIT SEARCHETH all things, yea, THE DEEP THINGS of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so THE THINGS OF GOD KNOWETH NO MAN, but the Spirit of God.

Unto us A CHILD IS BORN… unto us A SON IS GIVEN!! (Isa 9:6)

John 19:26  When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, WOMAN, BEHOLD THY SON!

There is more to this statement than might, at first, meet the eye!!

We need to understand the difference between being A CHILD (under tutors and governors) and being A SON (redeemed from under the law)

We receive “the earnest of the spirit” when we first believe (being BABES, who are YET CARNAL)… and we “must go on unto perfection” if we are to BECOME SONS!!

Spiritually speaking there is no difference between a “babe”, a “child” and a “woman” in scripture. These all speak to the “spiritually immature”.

Most can understand the reference to babes and children, but why “women”?

Because it is A WOMAN who GIVES BIRTH!!

And THE WOMAN “typifies” THE CHURCH!

So, just as these words speak OF MARY… so do they speak OF US:

Luke 1:35  And the angel answered and said unto her, THE HOLY SPIRIT SHALL COME UPON THEE, AND THE POWER OF THE HIGHEST SHALL OVERSHADOW THEE: THEREFORE ALSO THAT HOLY THING WHICH SHALL BE BORN OF THEE SHALL BE CALLED THE SON OF GOD.

Scripture speaks of A WOMAN “compassing” A MAN (Jer 31:22)

It asks the questions: “Ask ye now, and see whether A MAN doth TRAVAIL WITH CHILD? Wherefore do I see EVERY MAN with his hands on his loins, AS A WOMAN IN TRAVAIL, and ALL FACES ARE TURNED INTO PALENESS? (Jer 30:6)

Remember Christ’s words to his disciples about being ‘as a woman in travail’?

Paul speaks of his own “travail in birth”:

1Co 13:11-13 WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I spake AS A CHILD, I understood AS A CHILD, I thought AS A CHILD: but when I became A MAN, I PUT AWAY CHILDISH THINGS. For NOW (speaking of being A CHILD) we see through a glass, darkly; but THEN (AS A MATURE SON / MAN) face to face: NOW I know in part; but THEN shall I know even as also I am known. And NOW abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

We WALK BY FAITH… until we reach THE END of our faith… JESUS CHRIST

Paul said he “travailed in birth again” as he waited for Christ to formed in others (whom he called “my little children”)

THIS IS THE MYSTERY THAT WAS KEPT HID…

CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE OF GLORY!!! (Col 1:27)

This is SALVATION!

Being DELIVERED OF THE CHILD and receiving THE ADOPTION (= placement… this is not some sort of ‘legal’ transactions. I so often here people speaking about being “adopted” into the family of God as if they understand this “adoption” in terms of they way we understand “adoption” today… but we are not “adopted” by God… we are begotten from above, born again, born of God by the spirit of God!!) OF SONS!

This is why Paul said “I suffer not A WOMAN to teach, nor to usurp authority over THE MAN, but be in silence.”

It’s not about “women” according to a carnal/fleshly understanding. This is why Paul points to ADAM (= THE MAN = CHRIST) AND EVE (= THE WOMAN = THE CHURCH) in his explanation. This is not to be understood carnally. We are to know NO MAN according to THE FLESH.

It is “she” (EVE, THE WOMAN, THE CHURCH… who is a THEY) who “is saved” IN CHILDBEARING!

1Ti 2:12-15 But I suffer not A WOMAN (singular) to teach, nor to usurp authority over THE MAN (singular), but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. NOTWITHSTANDING SHE SHALL BE SAVED IN CHILDBEARING, if THEY continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

Paul uses Adam and Eve (the husband and wife) to typify CHRIST AND THE CHURCH.

Eph 5:32 THIS IS A GREAT MYSTERY: but I SPEAK CONCERNING CHRIST AND THE CHURCH.

Now how many will read and quote verses 22- 31 in order to prove that husband is the head of the wife… and just skip right over verse 21 (submit yourselves on to another) and verses 32 &33 (This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.)

It is all about CHRIST!

And CHRIST IN YOU!!

THIS IS SALVATION!!

This is THE REDEMPTION OF THE PURCHASED POSSESSION!!

We are ALL (both men and women) AS A WOMAN!!

Typified in EVE!

Typified in MARY!

If we have not already been “delivered of the child”, hopefully we are beyond being babes or children or even youth; hopefully we are AS A WOMAN IN TRAVAIL WHOSE HOUR IS COME!!

RECEIVE YE THE END OF YOUR FAITH, EVEN THE SALVATION OF YOUR SOUL!!

COME LORD JESUS!!

Started out with John the Baptist and locust… and end up with Mary as a figure of the church…. How did that happen? LOL

The Lord works in mysterious ways.

But, I guess, John did PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD!

All Blessings in Christ!
